Crystal Coulter is a Houston, Texas based visual artist who specializes in painting. Though oil paint is her medium of choice, she also delves into other painting mediums such as watercolor, ink, graphite and other disciplines like fiber art, digital illustration, and sculpture to create many of her works. Since her self-titled solo exhibition at the age of 20 in 2018, her work has delved into the concepts of mental health, self-healing, interpersonal relationships, and the overall marginalized representation as a means for herself and others like her to feel seen and represented in her work. As someone intrigued by psychology and personal evolution, Coulter addresses ideas of coping, visually exploring psychology, trauma, and recovery by using herself as a placeholder within her work in a way that is uncanny and even humorous. With inspirations from fashion, media, and popular culture, no matter how her work takes shape the intention is to create space, not only for the artist to feel heard but for others to speak about their experiences and growth as well.
Coulter is currently pursuing her MFA in Painting at the University of Houston with an eye towards teaching at the collegiate level while exhibiting nationally and internationally.
